We are excited to announce that after a five-year gap, the HETTANZ Conference is returning to Christchurch / Ōtautahi in 2022.

The Conference will begin with field trips during the afternoon, Friday 20 May, concluding with a grab and go lunch on Sunday 22 May.

Dr Michelle Johansson
Kaitiaki | CEO - Ako Mātātupu: Teach First NZ

Dr Michelle Johansson (MJ) is a Polynesian theatre-maker and mother, doctoral scholar and former high school dropout.  She serves as Kaitiaki|CEO of Ako Mātātupu: Teach First NZ; as Kaiwhakahaere at Māia Centre for Social Justice and Education; and as the Creative Director of the Black Friars Theatre Company. South Auckland, decile one born and bred, she is proud to work in the spaces where Education, Equity and the Performing Arts meet for Young Brown Scholars.  

Michelle’s focus for talanoa this year is on Hau’ora, Identity and the Lies-We’ve-All-Been-Told-About-Education-and-Equity. In her talk, she’ll speak frankly from her experience about what works and what doesn’t for our nation’s young brown scholars.



Dale Bowie
Development Chef, Ideas 2 Plate

Dale Bowie gained his experience as a development chef in Heston Blumenthal’s  Experimental kitchen at The Fat Duck. It was at The Fat Duck that Dale learnt to harness creativity, combining experimentation and creative thinking with his understanding of food science. Having worked for Gordon Ramsey and other top chefs around the world he has a wealth of knowledge in the food development sector.

On returning to New Zealand Dale owned and operated Wanaka Gourmet Kitchen where he gained New Zealand experience. During Dale’s time as the development chef for the Te Mana lamb project he saw the potential for New Zealand produce. Taking his passion for food, nutrition, and science he has created Ideas 2 Plate, a food development company.

Dale currently leads a number of development projects focussing on New Zealand flavours. He is working closely with New Zealand farmers and AgResearch to look at new innovative products.



Brianne West
Founder, Ethique – Environmentalist & Social Entrepreneur

Brianne West a New Zealand entrepreneur and founder of Ethique – the world’s most sustainable beauty brand now sold in over 20 countries, in more than 4000 stores.

She was named a ‘ Top 100 Global Thinker’ by Foreign Policy magazine in 2016, the 2019 NZ EY 'Young Entrepreneur of the Year' and the One Young World's Entrepreneur of the Year in 2020.
